i grew up in mechanicsville.. if anyone knows where that is so it would be cool to be not too too far from there since thats where my family is.. i get out of the army in about 7 months and am trying to figure out where i want to live…..i want to live near the water, lake, river whatever.. the mountains would be nice too… outdoor activities, live music… not in the city.. but not too far from the city… i love nature and outdoor activities.. hiking, biking, jogging… any suggestions?

Anywhere in Fairfax county is great. The further away you get from DC the cheaper it is to live. I have friends that live in Alexandria and love it, but it is costly to live there and a little more urban. Most Fairfax towns have a surburban feel to them.
There is something called the cross county trail in Fairfax that runs the entire distance of the county some 40 miles. Its great for jogging and biking my friends tell me. It is not completely paved but it is quite scenic (link below).
Also link to Virginia greenways. That might provide some guidance outside of the Fairfax area. If you enjoy biking it is a good starting point for planning excellent biking vacations as well.
Good luck with the move!
