I checked into a couple and eventually used
plentyoffish.com
Reasons: it was Free, safe, lots of choices, etc.
I met my current bf on that site and 17 months later we are still together and going strong.
Plentyoffish.com is the biggest and best of the free sites so I would start there.

There is no guarantee that the profiles on paid sites are any more serious or genuine than those on free sites, as the paid sites allow people to create profiles for free, and they only screen the ads – no site runs any checks on the people submitting the ads. Also on paid sites you cannot tell if the person you are writing to is a paid up member or if their subscription has lapsed, so you can waste time writing to people who are unable to reply to you.
If you are in the UK you might enjoy flirtomatic.com. On this site there is no email, you instant message the other members. I have found it a lot of fun and have chatted with some nice men.
