I am a Wintonian but currently living outside Hampshire borders as I'm married to a Serviceman. I can't tell you how much I miss nights out in Southampton. Have you discovered Oxford Street? it's down near the docks and houses lots of bars and restaurants for grown ups. The top of town is the student area for the young people, best avoided! The closer you get to the sea the more grown up it gets! There is a brilliant bar/restaurant/night club called Dock Gate 4 (it's in the old Cunard building). It's a thirty - forty something hang out and the good thing for you is that it's the kind of place where you can just hang out on a bar stool and get talking to people. it's not cliquey and I've often ended up talking to the person I was sitting next to when I was there with my friends, or waiting for them. The night club downstairs has seating that dictates everyone sits next to each other and you always end up in conversation with strangers. The other place in Oxford Street where people on their own can meet at the bar is Oxfords but it's more of a restaurant, so although good, not as good for your purpose as Dock Gate 4.
I envy you being in Southampton. It's a city full of life and it's very friendly. I am quite sure that you'll have mates in no time.
